If you don’t have Shan Kat A Kat Masala:
Don’t worry! You can create a fantastic substitute using these spices:
- A pinch of red chilli powder
- Salt – to taste
- Fennel powder – 1 tsp
- Garlic powder – 1 tsp
- Cinnamon powder – 1/2 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder – 2 tsp
- Black pepper – 1/2 tsp
- Cardamom powder – 1/4 tsp
- Cumin powder – 1 tsp
- Carom seeds (ajwain) – 1/2 tsp
- Dried fenugreek leaves (kasuri methi) – 1 tsp (crushed)
Instructions:
- In a pan or pot, brown the minced beef over medium-high heat. Ensure it’s crumbled as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the grated garlic and ginger to the browned beef and sauté for about a minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomato and cook until it softens, approximately 5 minutes.
- Stir in the Shan Kat a Kat Masala (or your homemade spice blend). Mix well, ensuring the meat is coated evenly.
- Add water, just enough to create a slightly moist consistency. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the meat is cooked through and the flavours have melded. The time will depend on your stove and the type of mince.
- Garnish with fresh coriander.
- Serve hot with lemon wedges and sliced red onion. This dish is delicious with rice, roti, or naan bread.
Don’t hesitate to experiment with variations to suit your preferences! Enjoy!
